So you've started to feel comfortable with your 10Ks and you've began dipping your toe into longer runs. Maybe it's time to start looking at (and training for) your next big challenge, the half marathon!
This guide is going to go through everything you'll need to know about prepping for your first ever half marathon!
Getting Ready for Your First Half Marathon
How Many Km/Miles is a Half Marathon
A half marathon works out at 21.2kms which is 13.1 miles. There's no doubt this is a big jump up from a 10K, it's more than double. But again, with a consistent training schedule, this is achievable.
How To Start Training for a Half Marathon
If you're looking at signing up to a half marathon, then it goes without saying you have some cardio fitness and on average, you should be running 5Ks multiple times a week with no issue.
A suitable amount of time to train for a half (with a decent level of fitness) would be around 8-12 weeks, so factor that in before you sign up to that half marathon that's on next weekend!
A standard training plan would have 5 days on and 2 rest days. The active days would be a mix of gym/weight training and runs. There would be a combination of shorter runs and long runs, all working with each other to build up a mix of stamina, strength and keeping things interested. The last thing you want to do is have long run after long run then potentially injure yourself before the big race. It's also incredibly boring and hard to motivate yourself if you know it's just running day after day.
There are plenty of running plans and resources, some of our favourites include Cancer Research UK and Runner's World.
How Long Does it Take to Run a Half Marathon
A good time for a beginner/first race would be anything under three hours. If you are more intermediate then you may be pushing for around 2 hours. Of course this all depends on a number of different factors, including the weather, your pace, any injuries etc.
When it comes to pace, make sure you start off at a comfortable pace to ensure you don't exhaust yourself too early.
Remember though, just like all runs, the only person you are really in competition with is yourself. If you've never ran a rull half marathon before, then don't focus too much on timings, focus on getting to the finish line.
A half marathon is no mean feat, it requires dedication, hard work and commitment. But with the right training plans, making sure you're fueling your body, getting enough rest and you've got the right training clothing, then you can be unstoppable.
