Since Autumn is a transitional season, the weather can sometimes be more of an issue than in other seasons. Since it can be unpredictable, when you're planning your bike ride, it's important that you come prepared for anything that the weather could potentially throw at you.

What Should You Wear Cycling in Autumn?

Layering is key when it comes to biking in changeable weather. It means you're able to wear your summer cycling clothing, then layer up with jackets incase of colder temperatures, wind, rain etc. If you wear multiple layers, you have the flexibility to change as and when you need too which makes your ride feel more comfortable.

Your first layer is always your base layer. The role of the base layer is to wick any moisture and sweat away from the skin. This helps to reduce any rubbing, friction and discomfort on the skin. There are different styles of base layers, some more suitable for summer, more mesh like, breathable and with short sleeves and other base layers are more suited for winter as they're thicker and usually have long sleeves.

Layered onto your base layer would be your cycling jersey or vest. If you're unsure about the weather or worried that you may get too hot on the ride wearing a full sleeve jersey, it's worth investing in some arm warmers. They can be worn with short sleeve jerseys or vests and removed when needed, allowing for extra ventilation.

Leg and knee warmers work on the same premise, so you could wear cycling shorts or three quarter length cycling tights and layer up with the warmers.

The outer layer's job is to keep your dry and protected from the elements. That means you want to look for something that is waterproof and windproof. If you're riding at night, or in low light then you want an outer layer that is reflective or has reflective sections. Many of our cycling jackets are lightweight and breathable whilst also being waterproof or water resistant (depending on the material.)

Having a lightweight cycling jacket means you're able to fold it on itself and pack it down into a small space which won't weight you down on your ride.

Cycling Accessories

If it's looking like it's going to be a cooler day, then you can break out the full finger cycling gloves. Since you lose a large amount of body head through your extremities, having full finger gloves means you'll keep warmer for longer. You then of course have the option of taking your gloves off if you need too.

Other cycling accessories you may want to bring along on your autumnal rides could include neck warmers or gaiters, headbands or even thin beanie hats that could fit your bike helmet.

The main takeaway for your next Autumn ride is to layer up. Dress for a warmer ride, then add layers that will protect you from the elements. Many pieces of cycling clothing are made to be incredibly lightweight and breathable, some cycling jackets are also able to be packed into their own pocket making them super portable.
