Man taking off yellow softshell jacket

Softshell jackets, hardshell jackets, waterproof jackets, water resistant jackets... There are so many different style of outdoor jackets out there, how do you know which style of jacket works best for your adventuring needs? This guide is going to focus on what softshell jackets are, how they've been constructed, what makes them different to other style of jackets and when they would be appropriate to wear.

What Actually is a Softshell Jacket?

A softshell jacket is comprised of a woven material, they don't have a lining like traditional jackets, it's two layers of fabric that have been joined together to create a different style of lining. Since there is no traditional style of lining, air is able to pass through softshells easier than hardshell and other jackets. Making them more breathable and possibly even more comfortable than other jackets.

Softshell jackets are the mid point between a fleece and a waterproof jacket. If you're looking for warmth over wind/light rain protection then choose a fleece, but if you know the weather is going to hold out and you want something that is flexible, offers a high level of mobility and can provide cover for mild and moderate weather, then a softshell is what you want. A softshell is also ideal to be layered with other items to add more protection.

Softshells are made to be short in length and tight fitting. The fit make sure it helps to retain heat, but the material used means you still have the movement and flexibility. Some key features you want to look out for include -

  • Internal/external pockets - most jackets will come with a mix of pockets, useful for fitting small essentials like keys, phone, money etc. Cycling softshell jackets also have the option of having pockets at the back of the jacket to ensure nothing gets in the way.
  • A hood - whether you want a jacket with a hood on it or not depends on where you will be wearing the jacket. If you're planning on using the softshell as a mid layer under a waterproof jacket or coat, then it's more than likely that your outer layer will come with a hood. If not, then you may want to look for a softshell that has a hood on it, however be aware than the hood (and the jacket in its entirety) won't be waterproof, mainly just water resistant or wind proof.

The main objective of a softshell is to be a mid or a transition piece between fleece and waterproof. When choosing between different jacket styles, take into account the environment you're going to be exploring, what the weather is going to be like (taking into account it could change) and choose the one that ticks all the boxes for what you need.

We offer both men's softshell jackets and women's softshell jackets and our range of cycling softshell and windshell jackets are classed as unisex.
