You've been putting in the training for months, building up your distances and stamina and as your first triathlon approaches you may be wondering, what do I wear? Can I wear the same workout clothing that I've been wearing throughut my training? Is there anything that I need to wear/have with me during the race that I haven't had during my workouts?

This quick guide is going to cover all of your triathlon outfit options.

What Should You Wear in Your Triathlon?

During your training you will most likely have been wearing activewear like gym leggings, shorts, sports bras and vests.

However, when it comes to the race day, your options need to be updated. Many choose to wear a tri-suit which has been specifically created for a triathlon. A tri-suit is made using a hydrodynamic, swimsuit like fabric. It also has padding in the crotch area which is much needed for the bike, however it's not as thick as standard bike short padding so that you don't feel uncomfortable whilst you're running.

A lot of triathlon races don't have adequate places to get changed and many trathlon runners won't want to add too many extra seconds onto their overall finishing time by having to get changed mid race. However, if you're not running the race in the mindset of trying to get a personal best then you do have the option to get changed after the swim, especially if you're planning on wearing something different to a tri-suit.

Clothing aside, you will be changing your accessories between each different section. During your swim you will most likely be wearing goggles and a swim cap, so in the transition between the swim and the bike, you'll be taking these off and putting on your cycling shoes, helmet and maybe even some sunglasses. Then as you're coming up to your run, you'll need to remove those cycling accessories and put on your running socks and shoes.
