Running in winter can be a little bit of a scary thought, however if you've got the right clothing and equipment then it can be as easy as running in the warmer months.

Running in Winter: Clothing Essentials

Layering is going to be your saviour when it comes to running in low temperatures. Layering up allows you to block out the cold weather, but also means you can remove the layers as you need too during the run.

The first layer will be your base layer. This layers purpose is to keep the moisture away. A sweat and moisture wicking base layer will help to reduce that clammy, sticky, sweaty feeling you may get on a run in the cold. Avoid anything that is cotton based as once cotton fabric gets wet, it stays wet and that's the last thing you want, especially if you're on a long run.

Your mid layer is what keeps you warm in low temperatures. This piece of clothing should be used to trap warm air in, but there is a fine balance between staying warm and overheating. Which means when you're looking for a mid layer, you need something that is also breathable. Look for garments that are made with fabrics like fleece, Merino wool or synthetic blends. When looking at the fit, you don't want something skin tight like your base layer but you don't want it overly loose to the point of it allowing heat to escape. Features like half or quarter zips and adjustable ventilation panels allow you to customise the airflow during your run.

The final layer, your outer layer is what protects you from the elements. A lightweight, waterproof jacket is what you're looking for. As well as waterproofing and breathability, you want something that has windproof qualities which can help protect you from any gusts of wind and helps to keep your body temperature constant. Look out for features like adjustable hoods, taped seams, wrist cuffs and reflective details for visibility on those late night runs.

An easy way to plan your winter running outfit is to go off the temperature.

If it's 10°C or above, a pair of leggings/running trousers or shorts and a long sleeved sportswear top would be find. If it looks like it's going to rain then bring along a lightweight, packable waterproof jacket. Anything around 5°C, then look at adding in your base layers to the outfit and a pair of gloves would help to keep you warmer for longer. If the temperature is around freezing, then you'll want to choose a pair of full length running trousers, your base layer, a long sleeved top and a running jacket. You lose a lot of heat from your extremities, so invest in some gloves and a hat. Anything below freezing, you're looking at a running outfit with all three layers, base, mid and outer.

Running in winter has it's own set of challenges, but as long as you're dressed for the weather, feeling cold won't be one of them.
