Whether you're a newbie in the gym or you've clocked in some serious pump hours, a gym bag can help make sure that you've got everything you need for a good session.

What to Pack In Your Gym Bag?

Of course different workouts will require different items, but here are the core gym bag essentials that you'll need with you for every gym sesh:

  • Water bottle: This one is the most obvious hence why we have it at the top of the list. You want to keep as hydrated as possible whilst doing any physical exercise. You want to make sure that you're replacing any fluids that are lost from your body, mainly in sweat. Avoiding dehydration also means you can avoid any unnecessary cramps, fatigue or dizziness.
  • Gym clothes: Some people go to the gym in their workout clothes and other don't. If you're straight after work for example. Ensuring you've got everything clothing-wise means you can set yourself up for a good workout. You've got the basics, gym tops, leggings or shorts and sports bra. Don't forget a fresh pair of socks. And weather depending, you might want to bring an extra hoodie or joggers for the journey home after.
  • Training shoes: Different types of training require different styles of trainers. Running trainers are different to lifters, and if you're doing something like crossfit you'll need a pair of shoes that is suitable for cardio and weight training.
  • Towel: If you're going to get a sweat on, a towel can help to keep you feel cool and comfortable. A microfibre cloth can help to wick sweat away from the skin.
  • Hygiene supplies: This is all those little things that you might need but could easily forget. Deodorant, hair ties, sanitary products. It could be worth having a small pouch that lives in your gym bag with all these items in it.
  • Headphones: Unless you've got a gym that blasts out some bangers, a good pair of headphones can really help push you through a workout. If you're a runner you can now find playlists containing music that have the exact beats per minute you need to run to, to hit a certain pace.
  • Post workout snacks: Of course after a good workout, you need something to help give you some back some energy and that's where a post workout snack comes into play. Look for something that is a good source of protein and carbs.

Optional Extras to Pack

Once you've got the basics, you can then look at packing those workout specifics. That could including things like lifting straps, a bracing belt and chalk if you're going to be doing heavy lifting. If you're going to be doing a lot of cardio you may want some extra electrolytes and your fitness tracking equipment/smart watches. If you're planning on starting the day with a workout, then you'll want to make sure you're bringing a large towel, some body wash and a change in clothes.

Some gyms offer complimentary towels and body wash however that's something that you need to check as gyms vary with what facilities they provide.
