Having a waterproof jacket is an essential in every wardrobe, especially if you're someone who enjoys sending a lot of time in the outdoors. But not every waterproof jacket is created the same. So how do you choose the 'best' waterproof jacket.. well that all depends what you want from the jacket and the environment you're going to be wearing it in.
Choosing the 'Best' Waterproof Jacket
Unfortunately, it's not as simple as finding the best waterproof jacket as all jackets are made with different features, fabric technologies, finishes etc.
You may not have realised this, but all waterproof jackets don't have the same level of waterproofing. When you're shopping around, look for the term 'Hydrostatic Head' the highest the rating, the higher the level of waterproofing is. We have our own blog that talked through exactly what Hydrostatic Head means, how it's measured and more. You can take a look at that blog HERE.
Other key jacket features include -
- Stretch fabric: which provides unrestricted movements and enhanced comfort levels
- Adjustable hood: this provides a higher level of protection that just a standard hood. A wire peaked hood allows you to mold the shape of the hood around your head to ensure all the rainwater runs off and away rather than down and in front of your face.
- Taped seams and waterproof zips: a jacket can't be fully waterproof if water can enter through the zips or where the seams meet.
- Adjustability: having cuffs and hems that can be tightened or loosened can really add to the amount of coverage that the jacket can offer.
Waterproof Jackets and Their Layers
Waterproof jackets are made in 'layers' and each layer adds another layer of protection. The standard jacket is classed as a 2 layer, the external and then the internal lining. These jackets are fine for everyday use. You then have jackets that are classed at 2.5 layers, like our Men's Breathe Out and our Women's Breathe Out jackets. This half layer comes from the specialised coating on the outer layer. 3 layer waterproof jackets provide the highest level of element protection. If you're going to be spending multiple days outdoors, with high chances of rain or extreme weather, then a 3 layer jacket is the one to look for.
Choosing the Right Style of Jacket for Your Activity
If you're looking for a waterproof jacket that can take you through every day usage, weekend walks and hikes with the family then most 'standard' jackets will do the job. Just check they have features such as a grown on adjustable hood, pockets and a relaxed fit (so you can layer underneath).
If you're more of a trail runner, cyclist or road runner, then you may want to look for something that is lighter. A waterproof soft shell jacket offers protection from the elements, as well as being easier to pack away or wrap around your waist easier than other jackets.
But if you're someone who enjoys spending time in more extreme weather conditions, then you need a waterproof jacket that has a been created using a 3 layer construction. Taped seams should be a necessity, and look out for jackets that have a hydrostatic head on the top end of the scale.
There is more than one answer to the typical 'what waterproof jacket is best?' because every jacket is different and they are made with different uses in mind. So rather than thinking which is best, spend some time thinking what features do I need my waterproof jacket to have?
